Lofthouse Brass Band swept to victory at the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships on Saturday 5th March 2016 for the 2nd time in 8 years.
The Wakefield based band picked up its second regional title since 2008 and qualifies for the National Championships, which take place at Cheltenham Racecourse on 17th September.
Lofthouse beat off stiff competition from 9 other bands to take the Yorkshire title at the competition held at St George’s Hall in Bradford. The band’s Principal Cornet, James Whitaker also picked up the award for best soloist along with their Musical Director, Andrew Whitaker who was awarded the Best Conductor Award.
Mike Kilroy (adjudicator) said that the bands at the top end of the results had understood 'the fundamental principles of the stylistic and technical playing' of the test piece ('The Journal of Phileas Fogg'). He added that the top two (Lofthouse 2000 and Rockingham) had 'really stood out'.
Andrew Whitaker, Musical Director commented ‘The band have worked really hard over the past few months and the commitment of the players has been brilliant. We’ve really worked on capturing the different styles of the movements and keeping control of the music.’
The band is hoping to continuing their winning form when they compete in the Buxton Brass Band Festival in May.
