For one night only...this concert is not to be missed!
Former members of The Luton Band have pulled out all the stops to bring the Band's name back to the public eye in recognition of an event that occured over 90 years ago. In September 1923 The Luton Band achieved a brass band double - winning the National Finals Contest and also the 1000 Guineau Trophy - a feat unmatched by any other brass band before or since.
Formed in 1883, The Luton Band quickly developed a special place in the hearts and minds of those local people who would regularly see the Band play around the town. Through the two World Wars the Band kept the morale up in the important manufacturing town of Luton. The Band also held a place in the top rank of brass banding until the late 1990's, featuring on both television and radio broadcasts as well as in many world renowned contests. In the late 1990's a falling number of members caused the Band to withdraw from contesting and although the Band has not formally disbanded there has not been any rehearsals for around the last 10 years.
In mid-2013 several former Band members led by Euphonium player Colin Reeves felt it was time to resurrect the Band's name with a Reunion Concert which would hopefully have the potential of rebuilding interest in The Luton Band within the local area. The night will be hosted by two former Musical Directors of The Luton Band, Mr Terry Brotherhood and Mr Phillip Littlemore and will be a showcase of some of the music that the Band was most well known for as well as bringing together some of the most famous names from the last 50 years of the Band's history alongside some younger, locally based players who are keen to develop the Band's name again within the town. It will also be a chance to remenisce of the days when The Luton Band really were '...The Best Band in the Land...!' There will be something for everyone so why not come along for an exciting evening of music?
The Luton Band 2014 Reunion Concert is taking place at St Mary's Church, Church Street, Luton, LU1 3JF starting at 7pm on Saturday 31st May 2014. Doors open at 6:30pm and entry is free however a retiring collection will be held in aid of St Mary's Church Fund.
