Ireland Colliery would like to welcome a new player to the ranks in time for their third consecutive trip to the finals.
Michael Thackary joins the band on soprano cornet after showing an interest in the vacant position which was being made available after the finals. Michael is a young guy studying at Sheffield University for his medical degree and comes from banding roots over in Saddleworth playing with Mossley, Staybridge old, Oldham (Lees) and Friezland . His first performance with the band was at the North East Derbyshire Entertainment contest last Saturday where the band produced a fine performance to claim 2nd prize.
Ian Knapton told Empty Chairs: “even though we had Owen Wedgewood booked on the soprano cornet for the finals and he and us were fully committed to it; we had to think of the long term plan of the band. Which is aiming for another promotion in consecutive years. The finals will be the last contest of the year before we move into the 2nd section so it is the last chance we will get to see how the players do under pressure. We hope Mike enjoys his time with the band and would like to put on record our thanks to Owen Wedgewood for his commitment and continued work on repairing the bands instruments with fantastic craftsmanship and we would recommend this service to any other band”
