The Cornwall Brass Band Association recently ran a very successful workshop for junior players. The venue was the much acclaimed Lanner Bandroom, which proved ideal with its large rehearsal room and smaller rooms for sectionals. The day was aimed at junior players and attracted 32 learners with an age range from six to seventy two years, with playing experience from four weeks to four years, which was quite a challenge for Darren Hawken, the Workshop Leader, and his team of tutors, Hannah Hawken, Lee Rouse, Mark Arnold, Paul Uzzell, and Simon Martindale, all members of local bands.
All those taking part thoroughly enjoyed the day. One little girl was heard to say “the music was hard – there were even upside down notes” and a little boy “had played so much music he had blown his face off!”
However, they have all asked for another day to be organized so it must have been worth it and the feedback from their parent bands has all been positive.
Cornwall already has its very successful Cornwall Youth Brass Band so by involving players whose standard is below that of the CYBB, the Cornwall Brass Band Association feel that these workshops will help to build a firm foundation for all member bands.
