Newark Town Band is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Rupert Trippett as their Musical Director. Rupert is an experienced and accomplished musician and music teacher. He has been actively involved in Brass Bands from a young age, playing trombone at the highest level for over 30 years. In addition, Rupert is a proficient percussionist, pianist and vocalist.
During the 1980’s Rupert played for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and gained Grade 8 with Distinction on Trombone. Rupert then studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire (Denis Wick, London Symphony Orchestra), wining the Bernard Brown Memorial Prize for Brass in 1989 before graduating in 1990. During his time at the Birmingham Conservatoire Rupert also played with the Desford Colliery Band under the baton of James Watson, and was part of the team that won 4 National Championship Band of Great Britain titles in 5 years. Rupert was then the Principle Trombone of the Sellers Engineering Band for 8 years, and held the Principle Trombone seat of the Yorkshire Building Society Band when they won European Championship contests in 1996 (Norway) and 1997 (London). In addition, Rupert has also been a guest player with most of the top section bands. He has toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, New Zealand and Japan as a Trombonist with various ensembles including D’Oyly Carte Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Orchestra Da Camera, the English Symphony Orchestra, London Bach Orchestra and various studio orchestras. Rupert has recorded many CDs, both with bands and as an accompanying pianist.
Rupert completed a post graduate year at the Royal Academy of Music, London, gaining an Advanced Diploma in Orchestral Studies (Trombone) with Harold Nash (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden) and LRAM and is a fully qualified teacher of music. Before taking over as Head of Music in 1996 at the Garibaldi College, Mansfield, Rupert was a peripatetic instrumental teacher. He taught trombone, piano and percussion in secondary and primary schools across the Midlands and in Yorkshire, as well as private tuition. Rupert is currently Head of Music at The Elizabethan Academy, a position he has held since 2002.
Rupert’s extensive Brass Band experience and his skills as a teacher means that he is ideally placed to work with the diverse members of Newark Town Band, who range from highly accomplished and experienced musicians with upwards of 60 years Brass Banding experience under their belt – to youngsters at the start of their musical journey. We welcome Rupert and look forward to a very exciting future working with him to bring Brass Band music alive for our members and audiences alike!
