~~Reports & Results: Battle of the Bands 2015

The 9th ICCB Battle of the Bands contest, sponsored by Raw Brewery, was held at the new and improved venue of Parkside Community School, Chesterfield on Sunday.

Fine performances

Adjudicators were Martin Heartfield and Mike Fowles, who between them judged 14 fine performances. The standard throughout the day was of a high standard with Martin commenting  on the training band and unregistered bands high level of banding basics with some great young players within the ranks.

Mike commented that in the 3rd/4th section and in the 1st/2nd section there were some very good performances with some programs that were well put together and thought out, but some bands just played at one dynamic throughout the programs and didn’t take the risks in the acoustic which others had.

He also commented that in the 1st/2nd section the winners were hard to pick between two bands with one playing a very technical program which had errors in the basic ensemble and execution of the pieces, and the other band not playing a very technically challenging program but was well directed and had fewer errors in the basic ensemble and execution.

Victories

The Training Band honours eventually went to Coleshill Youth Brass conducted by Stephen Fagg, with Carlton Brass Training Band under the baton of Geoff Hawley, taking the trophy for the Unregistered section.

Deepcar Brass Band gave a winning performance under MD, Lindon Bolt which led to them taking the Third/Fourth Section honours ahead of Pleasley Colliery Welfare Band and Rolls Royce Derby Band.

In the First/Second section, Dronfield Genquip Band, conducted by Tabby Clegg gave a wildly entertaining performance to take the accolade of winning the inaugural 1st /2nd  section battle of the bands winners trophy .

Thanks

Event organiser Ian Knapton said: ‘9 years ago me and Mel Frost a former member of the band came up with the idea for this contest which was aimed at offering bands the chance to perform an entertaining program to brass band lovers, this year has been the best year yet with over 300 people in the door throughout the day plus all performers.  I would like to give my thanks to the committed and hardworking team of ICCB players and supporters who worked tirelessly to make this event the best yet.  Young and old worked so hard over the day and had been working since the Friday night when the Music & Real Ale festival which Battle of Bands is part of, they ensured this ran smoothly.  We would also like to thank Raw Brewery whose ongoing support to the band is invaluable’ and Parkside Community School which enabled this event to be bigger and better’.

Support

Band Chairman Gary Willis also added: ‘The Committee would like to thank the sponsor, Raw Brewery and the team of helpers; without their contribution this contest would not be as successful as it is. We would also like to thank all the bands for entering and entertaining and hope to see them next year on Sunday 12th June at Parkside Community school get your entry forms now.’
