REDRUTH TOWN BAND - NATIONAL FINALS CHELTENHAM

The champions of West of England, Redruth Town Band were outstanding performers in a contest made up of 18 bands that made the most of the opportunity to show off their emerging skills sets on Stephen Bulla's excellent set-work, 'Beecher Variations'.

Redruth were part of the top two, referred to as being a class apart; producing accounts full of detailed precision and warm ensemble sounds backed by excellent solo contributions that brought the stylistic character of the music to the fore.

At the helm, the direction of Andrew Craze (of whom have tasted success here in the past) certainly spoke of the hard work spent on banding basics (especially "listening to each other) that resulted in noticeable displays of mature musicality. Here the MD drew some wonderful playing from around the stands; the music having a rich sense of character and dynamism balanced by lyrical interludes and plenty of stamina in the tank for a thumping close.

They gave the judges the "lyrical quality we were looking for", with judges stating that it meant it was a very difficult decision to make in the box.   Remarking on Redruth adjudicators commented that their performance was full of control and character, with lovely lyrical lines with precise playing.  A very enjoyable performance, lots of energy, colour and composure.

Redruth returned home proud with their efforts. A band with a rich history dating back to the 1830s, they have been rejuvenated in the last year by the return of local lad Andrew Craze. Whilst it's rare that a performance as good as theirs misses out on top spot at Fourth Section level, you suspect they are a band to watch out for in the coming few years.

Cheltenham has seen many famous close-run victories by 'a nose' in length over the years, and this was certainly one of them.   Redruth Town Band have proudly represented their town and Cornwall, bringing home a well-deserved 2nd Place Trophy from the Brass Band National Finals of Great Britain 2019.

The band are celebrating this fantastic result and would like to thank everyone for their support with a FREE concert on Sunday 29th September, 2.30pm at the Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth.  The bar will be open, refreshments and cream teas will be available!  All Welcome!!
