More news from Deepcar Band

Deepcar Band were delighted to hear the news over the weekend that their Solo Horn Player Paul Kirk has been accepted into the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB). Paul was taught to play at Deepcar from the age of 7 and progressed onto Solo Horn 3 years ago. Now as an 18 year old he is the first player from the Deepcar’s teaching and training band process to be accepted into the NYBBGB.

Paul Higham, the band’s solo trombone player was the person who taught Paul Kirk (yes i know too there are many Paul’s!) to play his first note said of the news:

“It makes me extremely proud to think I taught him how to play his first note just a few years ago, and now he’s achieved this”.

This further highlights the successful training programme which has been in place at Deepcar for the past 14 years resulting in over half of the players currently playing in the senior band have come through their teaching and training band programme. There is also a healthy number of players in bands around Sheffield and Barnsley area who were all taught to play at Deepcar band, and have now gone on to play at a higher level.

The great news about Paul was given a further boost when hearing that another former player with the band: Lewis Bettles had made it into the final 5 brass players of the BBC young musician of the year competition. Lewis - a superb young Trombone player is currently studying in Manchester, but he actually played percussion at Deepcar before being lured into a higher section band first as a percussionist, then as their Trombone player. Not only is Lewis a fine Trombone player, but a very talented percussionist and everyone at Deepcar Band wishes him all the very best in the competition, and will be following him closely.
